PSJMC 9/4 Report Back

We want to report back directly to you following our meeting with hospital leadership on Thursday, 9/4—and share the results of the survey you participated in.

🔍 Survey Results:

Nearly 50 ED nurses responded to our survey.
Not a single person agreed with management’s decision to lift the visitor restriction.
Your feedback was clear, thoughtful, and overwhelmingly opposed to the change.

đź“‹ Meeting Recap:

Together your Union Rep/Org and steward Joyce Powell met with the CNO, ED Director, and two HR reps after we issued a cease and desist on what we viewed as a unilateral change in working conditions. Management had emailed all ED nurses stating that the 1-visitor policy was no longer in effect, citing CMS guidelines.

We shared your survey responses (anonymously) and asked for a real discussion. Instead:

Management dismissed your feedback, (see for yourself!) claiming our portrayal was inaccurate.
They refused to engage with the substance of your concerns.
They leaned on CMS guidelines, which do not prohibit visitor restrictions—only discriminatory ones.

🗣️ What the CNO said:

“Nurses have the autonomy to use critical thinking and if they feel the need to limit visitors, they can remove them. They are all equipped to make these decisions appropriately and should feel empowered to do so.”

She repeated the word “empowered” multiple times—while ignoring the fact that nurses are being left to enforce a policy they do not support, without clear backing or protection.

📌 Conclusion of the Meeting:

Management admitted that the change feels new because older nurses were used to the previous policy, but they don’t feel the need to take any action.
They claimed they’ve “rounded” and nobody raised concerns, and said they’re open to further discussion—but only if needed.
