The last few days have been devastating for millions of residents across Southern California, as fires ravage our communities. Those who have been impacted include our neighbors, our patients and many of our union brothers and sisters. On top of the loss of life and property caused by fires, the worsening air quality is producing a widespread threat to public health.
In the face of crisis, the members of our union have always pulled together. That is what we must do now.
We are compiling a list of volunteers for various opportunities to help our communities during this time of need and would like to know if you’re interested in being added to the list. Our staff and members can support in various ways, such as through distributing supplies to families in need, helping out in evacuation centers, making wellness calls to people who have been displaced, helping to provide basic medical care in our RV, etc. If you would like to participate, enter your contact info here, and we will follow up soon.
Separately, if you have been affected and need help, there are resources available. See this SEIU California guide and application form for housing assistance and help with disaster related expenses, which is available to all of our SEIU members.
Additionally, here is information about additional resources via the LA County emergency website:
- If you are concerned about your mental health, call LA County 24/7 Mental Health Hotline at 1 (800) 854-7771. The Help Line serves as the primary entry point for behavioral health resources.
- LA County residents may be eligible for tax relief if your property is damaged or destroyed. Visit the website of the LA County Assessor for more information.
- Rideshare services Uber and Lyft are offering free rides to residents impacted by the fires. For Lyft, use the promo code CAFIRERELIEF25 for 2 free rides up to $25, currently available for the first 7,000 riders. For Uber, use WILDFIRE25 in the wallet section of the app for a free ride to a designated shelter. Updates for these services are available at Uber and Lyft.
- Airbnb, in partnership with 211 LA, is offering credits for Airbnb stays for displaced or evacuated residents. Submit your information through this form to get verified. Note that space and available credits are limited.
- Watch Duty is a trusted source of information about the fires providing real-time alerts, fire perimeter and evacuation maps, and other information to help people in danger zones. Visit Watch Duty for links to download the app on your device. Many local authorities are also offering text alerts and notifications via apps.
We will continue to reach out with more information as it is made available. Please stay safe, and heed all evacuation orders, warnings and curfews implemented in some areas.
