Resolution supporting St. John's Regional Medical Center

September 30, 2024

Nurses and Monitor Technicians returned to the Oxnard City Council on September 25 to address the Community Services, Public Safety, Housing & Development Committee. This is the third visit our members have made to the council to fight the unsafe outsourcing of St. John's Monitor Techs to an Arizona data center. By now, the council should know that when it comes to patient safety, we don't give up!

Councilman Arthur Valenzuela stepped up to fight for patients and healthcare workers in the community he represents. Valenzuela—who is one of our locally endorsed candidates—introduced a resolution which calls on Dignity to "cease their stated plan to outsource the Monitor Techs at St. John’s Regional Medical Center to an outside facility in another state" and to "involve Nurses and other frontline Healthcare workers in decisions that directly impact patient care." In a 2 to 1 vote, the committee adopted the resolution. It will now head to the entire Council for consideration.

SEIU 121RN members should pay close attention to what happens in Oxnard. Hospitals across the country are exploring ways to cut corners by leveraging AI and other technologies, and this is a fight for patient safety that will impact us all. Watch our members in action and stay tuned for updates!
