AB2975 “Secure Hospitals for All!” Sacramento Lobby/Labor Committee Hearing Update

May 23, 2024

Great News! Our "Secure Hospitals for All" bill (AB 2975) reached a major milestone on April 17th, when it successfully passed the Assembly Labor Committee!

The bill—our priority legislation for this year—aims
to reduce violence involving weapons in
hospitals by requiring metal detectors at
key hospital entrances. It also mandates
that searches of patients' belongings
are conducted by trained security
officers—not Nurses or other healthcare
workers.

A group of SEIU 121RN members, including
Brittany Brandon (Southern California
Hospital Hollywood), Jesse Deol (Encino
Hospital Medical Center), Liz Loseva
(Riverside Community Hospital), Merthine
Thomas (Kindred Hospital Ontario) and
Dilton Castro (Monterey Park Hospital)
lobbied legislators ahead of the hearing.
These members shared wrenching
personal stories about their encounters
with workplace violence at the hospital,
helping to ensure the bill's successful
passage out of the committee with
unanimous, bi-partisan support.

If you would like to learn more about how
you can share your workplace violence
stories and participate in upcoming AB2975
lobby days, please reach out to your Union
Rep/Organizer, or email SEIU 121RN Political Coordinator Oscar Garcia at GarciaO@seiu121rn.org.
