Yesterday we kicked off bargaining with management. We have plenty of challenging issues at Kindred Ontario. Our facilities are in bad shape, some have no access to supplies. Workplace hazards and unsafe staffing impact Nurse and patient safety in heartbreaking ways.

We hear the stories—Nurses don’t have immediate access to supplies—or worse they are locked up and out of reach. We’ve seen the photos, Nurses don’t have sufficient room to move around with obstructions and clutter in patient rooms. Trip hazards like extension cords create a dangerous environment. These hazards coupled with unrestrained aggressive patients is unsafe for Nurses and patient.

Yes, management has a lot to improve. Our job is to help you develop and win contract language that addresses these issues. Today we did just that. For instance, we passed over a article that clarifies your access to a Labor Management committee (LMC). This is the space that you and management sit down and solve some of the nitty gritty issues like access to working ice machines in Unit 3, or no refrigerator in Unit 2—SMH!
