RNs at Barlow Respiratory Hospital (one of the oldest hospitals in Los Angeles) launched our “Let us breathe” contract campaign, which made it clear to management that we won’t let them suffocate the hospital by cutting corners and failing to invest in safe staffing levels.

RNs there won our first-ever wage scale recognizing our years of experience, which will help the hospital attract and retain experienced RNs.

We also won a strong commitment from the hospital—guaranteed in contract language—to carefully follow California’s ground-breaking nurse-to-patient ratio regulations. For example, Charge Nurses will no longer be pulled into ratio with our own patient load. We will no longer be required to cover for ancillary staff (such as Monitor Techs).
