WHAT: The Registered Nurses at Southern California Hospital at Hollywood have planned an informational picket to make public their grave concerns, including unsafe staffing levels and inadequate patient needs assessments.

WHY: The RNs formed a Union last year, in large part to remedy problems that affect patient care and safety. The RNs are currently using their first contract negotiations to push for their “Patient Safety is #1!” goals. These include enforcement of state-mandated nurse-to-patient ratios at all times, including during meal and other breaks; retention of qualified RNs to prevent skyrocketing turnover (33% RNs left in past 8 months); proper adherence to state laws mandating annual Patient Classification System Committee meetings, which help to ensure accurate measurement of patient acuities; guaranteed support for RNs’ important continuing education.

So far, the hospital has met these patient safety proposals with resistance.
