Patient Safety Crisis: Stop Repeat Offender Hospitals!
For hospital patient safety, RNs join Senator Leyva in support of SB 1288
WHAT: RNs will add their voices in strong support of SB 1288 (Leyva) prior to the bill’s hearing later that day in the Senate Health Committee.
WHY: Senator Leyva introduced SB 1288 in February in response to nurses who sounded an alarm on California hospitals’ unsafe staffing practices. California leads the nation in regulations that establish safe nurse-to-patient ratios. The problem is that the enforcement of those regulations is slow, inadequate—often nonexistent. SB 1288 will mandate unannounced inspections of hospitals with a special focus on adherence to California’s nurse-to-patient ratios as regulated by Title 22. This bill will also increase the penalties assessed against hospitals who continue to flout these regulations.
WHO: SEIU registered nurses, Senator Leyva, Assemblymember Miguel Santiago, CDPH hospital inspector
WHERE: Capitol, Room 317
