Responsibilities: You will be an integral member of a fast-paced Communications Department. Under the direction of the Communications Director, the Communications Specialist will support a robust communications program for SEIU Local 121RN members with an emphasis on website development, member outreach via electronic and social media, video production and graphic design—all with a keen grasp of our mission and message. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, and be able to respond to time sensitive communications and deadlines. S/he must be a strong self-starter and have a commitment to fulfill the objectives of the organization. S/he must thrive in an environment with tight deadlines, changing priorities, high-pressure and irregular hours.
Examples of Duties:
- Design, prepare and edit publications for internal and external audiences, including magazines, newsletters, flyers, signage, brochures, paid media, electronic and social media and other communication vehicles.
- Create and edit video and photographs using optimal equipment and software applications.
- Develop and maintain website(s). Ensure content is up-to-date.
- Assist with mass email and text creation and broadcasting.
- Evaluate and recommend new and improved software applications and communications tools.
- Assist with multiple campaigns across traditional and digital media, including email, video, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.
- Help develop, manage and extend a consistent brand for the organization through all work products.
- Ensure web content is kept regularly up-to-date and adheres to editorial house style and brand guidelines, including developing multi-media assets and managing campaign microsites.
- When needed, participate in campaign strategy and planning meetings with the Communications Director and other Union Leadership
- Performs other duties as required to support goals and mission of the Union.
Ideal Skills:
- Demonstrated design, verbal, visual/graphic, communications skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Competence in proofreading and editing.
- Demonstrated proficiency in HTML, web authoring and editing; Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier); Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge of Blue State Digital and Revere Messaging a plus.
- Excellent photography and video skills, including polished video production.
- Ability to meet tight deadlines and manage conflicting priorities.
- A high level of judgment; ability to take initiative and work independently; ability to collaboratively work with leaders, members, and staff in complex and sometimes sensitive political situations, always exercising a high level of professionalism.
- Three (3) or more years in campaign communications for a progressive political campaign, non-profit organization or Union, or other related experience.
- Strong commitment to progressive social change and activism and understands and commits to SEIU Local 121RN’s members and mission.
- Ability to travel regularly for planning meetings, events and member meetings. Willingness to work long, varied hours including evenings and some weekends.
- Skills and/or experience in targeted and precise message development to diverse audiences including represented members, community groups, allies and elected officials preferred
Typical Working Conditions: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, requirements include:
- Regularly operate a computer, cell phone, and other general office equipment.
- Occasionally walk from door to door for 3 hours at a time with rest and meal breaks.
- Stand, walk, and sit for hours at a time.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
- A regular work week can be 8 hours per day, 5 days per week. However, the role will require a commitment to often work long and irregular hours to prepare for and attend events and union activities on weekends, evenings and some holidays (e.g. Labor Day).
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can elevate during events and campaign activities.
- Occasionally, when we have major events to plan for, you must be able to work every day for 2 weeks.

Requirements:
- The Communications Specialist will work out of the Pasadena office with some travel across Southern California.
- Must possess a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance and a reliable automobile for business use.
- Four year college degree preferred, but a combination of comparable skills and experience in the Communications field will be considered.
Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time, salaried, overtime-exempt position.
Salary for this position is commensurate with the amount of the candidate's relevant professional experience. This position is represented by a staff Union.
