When we met this week to bargain over changes to our phone system that utilizes new Vocera phones, we asked for a list of which departments and who specifically will be using the phones, as well as specifics on the new phones. It appears the phones will be given to specific positions (manager, charge) in specific departments.
Here's a re-cap or what we learned from Duane Lovelace in IT:
- These phones are replacing the handhelds because the handhelds are outdated and the hospital can't get replacement parts. Phones are for communication convenience and callers can leave a message. The phone is left at work when we end our shift and we can be disciplined if our phone is lost or destroyed.
- We received a list of where the transponders are located on the ceilings in the hospital. None are in the restrooms.
- When you have these phones on your person, you can be tracked (like the handheld) to within 30 feet of your location in the hospital. The data is not stored and the hospital can not track how long you've been there or if you're in the restroom.
- ER is the first to get these phones as the "pilot program" and went "live" on November 8. The phones are expensive at $400 each and not everyone will get one. Each unit will receive an allotment of phones and the Director/ Manager decides who will get the phones for the day.

Thank you to Lorraine Myrick, Nora Parkins & Maxine Davidson for participating in this bargaining process.
