New reporting from CBS Los Angeles details a police shooting inside Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, where a Simi Valley officer shot a domestic violence suspect being monitored in custody on Thursday afternoon. The suspect got into an altercation with the officer, which prompted the shooting; he survived and was reported in stable condition, and the officer was not harmed.

The incident raises serious questions about how the hospital handled a violent situation unfolding inside its own walls — questions our union brought forward on behalf of the caregivers who work there.

Our Executive Director Rosanna Mendez spoke to CBS about a series of failures and missed protocols that compounded the danger to staff and patients.

Mendez pointed to alarms that were never triggered: “Alarms, including a Code Grey and Code Silver, that should have immediately notified staff about a violent patient and a shooting, were not activated.” She added that hospital security did not immediately respond, and raised questions about whether the suspect was properly restrained while in police custody.
