BARGAINING UPDATE: Your bargaining Team is fighting for a safe hospital

Last night your Bargaining Team demanded HCA act with urgency to discuss and implement our health and safety proposals. With members in attendance that are still shaken and traumatized by the shooting of a patient on the hospital floor, HCA management said they weren’t going to discuss safety and security issues.
As your Union Representatives demanded more information from HCA about what exactly happened that day, Nurses have reported that there were significant communication, response, and safety failures. Significant failures in safety protocols which Nurses and Licensed Medical Professionals have reported for years at LRRMC. Safety failures that have made them say they feel unsafe at work.

“Safety is a pretty basic thing to guarantee employees. We’re asking for the bare minimum. Every survey reveals the same, ‘we don’t feel safe at the hospital.’ Thursday’s shooting at Los Robles was an extreme case, but it shows a breakdown in safety measures by the hospital.
We tried to call security and a Rapid Response Code for the patient but calls for security are routed to a company in Las Vegas. Having to call out of state to give a detailed explanation of a situation and where I’m calling from causes delays during emergency situations. During this incident, I needed an immediate on-site response. Instead, security showed up after everything was over. Management showed up before security did. Then management asked if we pressed a panic button, which they installed without telling Nurses about it or training us on their use. It’s not helpful when we’re not made aware or trained and defeats their purpose.
We need improved security in the building who can immediately respond to crisis situations. It shouldn’t have to take a traumatic event like a patient being shot inside the hospitals and patients being traumatized, for management to realize that.”
On Tuesday, your Bargaining Team fought for contract language that would provide a safer environment for Nurses, other employees and patients. The demands were simple:
• An in-house violence screening tool,
• Full screenings of patients/visitors for weapons,
• Appropriate security personnel,
• An in-house staff or system that issues immediate alerts when dangerous situations happen,
• Relief from Duty for any RN who is subjected to or is a witness to workplace violence incidents, and more.
