Our Union’s President on AI in patient care and the need for legislative action, via VOX

New California legislation, introduced by Assemblymember Mia Bonta, aims to put a check on generative AI systems that masquerade as professional healthcare providers.

Our union supports this important bill, because we know that AI is no replacement for a well-trained, compassionate, human Nurse or Licensed Healthcare Professional.

Our Union’s President, Leo Perez, framed the issue in an interview in VOX: “As nurses, we know what it means to be the face and heart of a patient’s medical experience,” Leo Perez, the president of SEIU 121RN (an affiliate of SEIU representing health care professionals), said in a statement. “Our education and training coupled with years of hands-on experience have taught us how to read verbal and nonverbal cues to care for our patients, so we can make sure they get the care they need.”
