121RN Leaders Rub Elbows With Lawmakers
Friday, November 20, 2009 - SEIU held a reception for our Southern California elected political leadership, including State Assembly Members, State Senators, City Council Members, County Supervisors and School Board officials. Various SEIU locals, including 121RN, organized the event to allow our SEIU leaders and members to meet and network in an informal setting with local elected politicians.
SEIU Local Union Presidents held a short program and addressed political concerns from each of their own locals. Gayle Batiste, SEIU 121RN president, addressed the importance of healthcare reform and what it would mean to nurses and their patients.
“With all the resources that we have, it is so sad that we’re in such a rich country and we can not provide healthcare,” Batiste said in her presentation. “We have to do this because our patients can not wait any longer.”
The event itself showcased SEIU’s role as a leader in the Los Angeles area and in statewide politics, but the reception was held near our homes to emphasize our role as voters. Although our elected leaders hold the key to our future in a political sphere, we hold the key to the future ambitions of our elected officials.
This event was an opportunity to build personal relationships with elected officials and their key staff.
